Recently there have been a barrage of Facebook hacks taking place. You may receive an email with a passcode that was requested in an attempt to access your account. Immediately click “I did not authorize this” to let Facebook know that it was not you who requested the code.
It is a must to change your password. Do not use pet or family names, birthdates, or addresses, they are all too easy to guess. Make it random and use at least one capital letter NOT as the first letter in the string.
This sometimes can do the trick, but not always. Occasionally they do get into the account and will change your email address to theirs. That is where this becomes tricky. Thankfully as this happened to a client recently we did find the right link to contact the fraud department of Facebook.
They should be able to verify your identity and get your account back for you.
Good luck!
